2010 Faith House

2010 Faith House

Shelter is a basic human need. Millions of people worldwide still face a future robbed of hope by the lack of adequate shelter. That is why Habitat for Humanity is determined that every one of God's people has a decent place in which to live. In the Municipality of Anchorage over 30,000 people live in substandard housing. Habitat's mission is to eliminate substandard housing in Anchorage and make adequate housing a matter of conscience and action!

We need your help. Former President Jimmy Carter made the assessment that if every faith community built or repaired at least one home per year, we could totally tranform the problems of housing and homelessness in the United States.

Many faith communities become involved in this exciting ministry because one person or committee is moved to action. Their determination is often the spark God uses to provide decent shelter for a family in need. Since 1992, in addition to keeping the mission of Habitat lifted up in prayer, the faith community has raised over $790,000 in house sponsorships and provided volunteers to help build homes for twenty-six Partner Families - housing 153 people, including 102 children.

This summer Habitat is building a four-bedroom, detached single-family home, like the one pictured below, at 729 Mumford Street in northwest Mountain View that is funded by both Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the local Lutheran community and named the 2010 Faith House. While Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Lutheran community of churches in Anchorage and the surrounding area will be providing the financial resources and a portion of the volunteers, additional volunteers from the remainder of the faith community are needed to help build this home with the Santiago Rivera Family.

Dave Wallace, a dedicated HFHA volunteer, is the Jobsite Supervisor for this build. He needs 5 - 10 volunteers per day, depending on the type and level of construction activity occurring on the jobsite. Volunteers work 8:30 am - 4:00 pm most Tuesdays - Saturdays. Completion of this home is scheduled for the end of September.

The Lutheran community's 2010 goals are to raise $25,000 in local funding and to provide at least 265 person-days of volunteer labor between June 15th and the completion of construction, scheduled for late September. As of July 20 they have raised nearly all of the local funding goal. To sign up to work at the Faith House, go to the Volunteer Calendar, click on "Have an Access Code?", and use the access code "Faith".

Members of the Faith Community

Thank you to Central Lutheran Church for raising donations of over $11,000 for the 2010 Faith House!!

Thank you to Amazing Grace Lutheran Church for raising $4,400 for the 2010 Faith House at their dinner auction on February 12th. The Virtual Tool Auction was a fun and creative way to raise funding for this project!!

Thank you to Anchorage Lutheran Church for having a 'Love Offering' on Sunday, February 14th and a Wine Tasting on May 22nd to raise funds for the 2010 Faith House. Funds are still coming in to help reach their $5,000 goal! They also have an "Informational Kiosk" set up in the foyer. In addition, they housed one of the three Global Village Teams who came to work on our jobsite this summer.

Thank you to Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church for raising donations of over $400 for the 2010 Faith House!!

Thank you to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for raising donations of over $1,200 for the 2010 Faith House!!

Thank you to St Mark's Lutheran Church for raising donations of over $1,100 for the 2010 Faith House!!

Because the 2010 Faith House is sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the local Lutheran community, the remaining churches in the faith community are raising funds for a Faith House in Habitat's 2011 building program* as follows:

2011 Faith House sponsorship goal = $100,000

40% or $40,000 raised in 2010 (without Lutherans) Raised to date = $26,279
60% or $60,000 raised in 2011 (with Lutherans)

These amounts are a significant increase from the $20,000 raised by the faith community in 2009 as part of the Community House, so new faith community partners need to be recruited to help fund the 2011 Faith House.

*In 2011 Habitat plans to be building seven townhomes in the Muldoon area, one of which will be the 2011 Faith House.
